NetApp ONTAP simulator Installation
The simulator gives you the experience of administering and using a NetApp storage system with all the features of Data ONTAP at your test environment. It can do almost all the functions of NetApp hardware device without purchasing the hardware.
Here we are using ONTAP simulator to provide storage for my VMware environment. We can also experience the features of Netapp storage area network.

Installing ONTAP Simulator
Download the dataOnTap simulator ESXi version, in my project, I got it from the datastore of NMIT. Right click on the DataONTAP.vmx and Add to Inventory to start the installation.
For configuring hard disk, I have deleted the current hard disk4, then added an 80GB hard disk. I have also enabled thin provisioning, which will help to optimize the efficiency of the storage with utilizing the available space.
The simulator needs two network adapters for internal communication between nodes in the cluster. The remaining two adapters are used for IP Storage protocols, management and replication between
clusters. In this practice, I am using only three network adapters and assigned IP address as 10.0.0.11, 10.0.0.12, 10.0.0.13 with 255.255.255.0 subnet. I am going to use the same IP range for my VM network.
For configuring the simulator, power on and Press Ctrl-C for Boot Menu when prompted then press 4 for entering the configuration mode.
The SIM comes with 2 virtual shelves of 14 x Type 23 (1GB) disks. Here I have deleted those 2 shelves and added 2 shelves of : 2 x 14 x Type 36 (9GB) disks.
Afer completion of the configurations, we can find the V-SIM in the VM network I have named it as DataONTAP, click on the summary to find the details.
Here we can confirm the network adaptors, storage space and IP address of the V-SIM.
