NetApp University - DATA NETWORK FUNDAMENTALS

DATA STORAGE AND DATA NETWORKING

Following are the data storage and data networking considerations

DIRECT ATTACHED STORAGE (DAS)

DAS is a storage which is directly attached to a server.

Following diagram shows how DAS storage works

NETWORK ATTACHED STORAGE (NAS)

In a NAS system, the storage is directly attached to the network using an IP address and it is working as a computer in the network.

Following diagram shows how DAS storage works

NAS system connections

STORAGE AREA NETWORK (SAN)

In SAN system, the storage appears to the network as an another hard drive and it can be shared with various applications,

Following diagram shows how NAS storage works

SAN system connections

DATA ACCESSING IN NAS AND SAN

The data accessing method in NAS and SAN are different. In NAS, the data are stored as files whereas in the SAN system data are stored in data boxes

SAN CONNECTIONS : iSCSI, SAS AND FC

Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI)

iSCSI is a standard which is used to transfer data in SAN system, it is an IP based client-server protocol and  it works on a standard cabling network .

Following are the features of iSCSI

Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)

It is an SCSI-based solution and it uses serial cables for the connection, it can limit to eight meters but it is a cheaper solution, that maks it a good solution for smaller systems.

Following are the features of SAS system

Fiber Channel (FC)

FC protocol can use fiber optical or copper cable.

Following are the features of SAS system

Comparison between iSCSI, SAS and FC

In this comparison, you can see the distance, speed, and cost of  iSCSI,SAS and FC

FILE AND BLOCK STORAGE

Block storage

Block storage store data as blocks, it is flexible and easy to administrate.

File storage

File storage store data as files. It is easy to install but it is less flexible

HIGH AVAILABILITY

High availability is an important factor in terms of reliability. the availability counts by number of nines, that means if it is 99.99% availability means it is highly reliable.
